Nineteen Eighty-Four is a great but very depressing novel by
George Orwell about the life under the rule of a purely tyrannical and dictatorial
government. The novel tells the story of a person who starts thinking of going
against the supreme ruler, the Big Brother, and then he is entrapped in a
series of events that are totally unimaginable. The basic philosophy of the writer is to
select whether capitalism is better than conservative and tyrannical rule and
vice versa. If one is brought up in liberal environment then the life of that
person is hell in a very conservative environment where highest form of surveillance
is there to keep an eye on him all the time. Can you live like that? The reader
automatically asks while reading. It’s like most powerful person has decided
that you should now live according to the rule-book he has created and then if
you try to resist or raise question, you are liable to be wiped out from the
history of humanity. It reminds me of the structure and living life style of
many religions and communities on earth who actually believe in choking the
person and kill the individuality that is the basic trait of any human. The
historical example of the divided states of Germany after the Second World War
comes into my mind when the government of East Germany practically proved that human
development can be taken back to Stone Age through total mind control of the
people of any place no matter what history they had. The ending of the novel is
something I wasn't expecting during the course of the events that the
protagonist was going through and that makes it a novel worth reading till the
end.
